Uganda Bugisu
Bugisu, Single-Origin
Bugisu is located in eastern Uganda along the border of Kenya, a region where coffee production is deeply rooted in tradition. Many farmers here still rely on small-batch, hands-on processing methods passed down through generations, preserving a strong connection to their heritage.
Coffee was introduced to the region in 1912 by the British Colonial Government, with the first nursery established in 1915. From 1915 to 1931, coffee marketing was controlled by private traders who had limited knowledge of proper drying, grading, and storage. As a result, quality suffered and Bugisu coffee fetched low prices on the global market.
In 1931, the Secretary of State for the Colonies, Lord Passfield, visited Bugisu and recognized the region’s potential. His support helped initiate improvements in processing and shifted greater control of the industry back to local farmers rather than private traders. These reforms marked one of the first major steps in Bugisu’s journey toward becoming the respected specialty coffee producer they are today.
