The Guji region of Ethiopia is known for its mineral-rich land, where gold, precious stones, and other valuable resources are found. Because of this natural wealth, the area was largely restricted to non-residents for many years. While the high elevations and fertile soil offered ideal coffee-growing conditions, those limitations made it difficult for large farms and production stations to establish themselves.
In recent decades, however, restrictions have eased, allowing more structured coffee farms and washing stations to develop and helping Guji coffee earn international recognition for its distinct quality and character. Some historians also believe that coffee has been used in this region since as early as the 10th century AD, further deepening Guji’s legacy within Ethiopia’s rich coffee history.
