Alta Mogiana, Brazil

Coffee arrived in Brazil in the early 18th century, traditionally traced to 1727 when Portuguese officer Francisco de Melo Palheta smuggled coffee seeds from French Guiana. What began as a small-scale crop quickly expanded due to Brazil’s ideal climate and vast land.

By the 19th century, Brazil had become the world’s largest coffee producer, a position it still holds today. Coffee fueled the country’s economy, shaping infrastructure like railroads and ports, while relying heavily on enslaved labor until abolition in 1888. The industry also drove immigration, bringing workers from Europe and Japan to sustain production.

In the 20th and 21st centuries, Brazil evolved from mass production to a leader in both commodity and specialty coffee. Today, regions like Minas Gerais and São Paulo are known not just for volume, but for high-quality beans with diverse flavor profiles, making Brazil a cornerstone of the global coffee industry.
