Mexico Altura Veracruz

Veracruz, Mexico

Veracruz Mexico was founded by Hernan Cortes in 1519 as La Villa Rica de la Vera Cruz, it’s Mexico’s oldest Spanish-founded city and a primary historic port on the Gulf of Mexico. For centuries, it was the main port for shipping Mexican silver and goods to Europe.

Coffee was first introduced to this region in the late 18th century via Caribbean trade routes, likely from French colonies in Haiti or the Dominican Republic. By the 19th century, coffee became a vital export. Veracruz became known for Altura (high-grown) coffee, which refers to beans being cultivated at superior altitudes, resulting in a denser, more flavorful bean.

In modern times, Veracruz is considered one of the most technologically advanced coffee regions in Mexico using controlled sowing and disease-resistant varieties. Veracruz remains a critical, historic hub for Mexican coffee, blending traditional shade-grown methods with modern, high-quality standards.
